In Ecuador, close to 20,000 basic recyclers and recyclers they walk the streets every day. They are the ones who sustain the country's recycling chain, but they have historically been invisible, stigmatized and ignored. Many times we don't even know their names.
At ReciVeci®, we always dream of changing that reality. Since 2016, when we launched our first crowdfunding campaign for ReciApp®, we want grassroots waste pickers to be recognized as residents of our neighborhoods and that their work be valued as an essential service.
Today we are taking a huge step towards that goal with the Recycler Profile in ReciApp®.
How did we make this possible?
This progress was not made from an office, but together with those who experience recycling every day. We sat down with basic recyclers of different ages and experiences, tested the interface with them, received their feedback and ideas, and with those contributions we built the first version of the profile.
The result is a tool designed with and for basic recyclers, that recognizes their voices and responds to their real needs.
What is it and how does it work?
The Recycler Profile is a new tool within the app that allows, little by little, recyclers to be integrated into a technological recognition system.
Each recycler or recycler who completes their verification process will have a visible profile on the map and a unique QR code that identifies them as a “Verified Recycler”. So, when someone delivers their recyclables directly, they both earn ReciPoints®.
- The person places a verified recycler on the map and contacts him.
- At the meeting, the recycler shows their QR from the app.
- The person scans it and that's it! The two score points.
These points are redeemed for in-app rewards. Today for recyclers we offer gloves, aprons and caps, and we continue looking for allies who want to add benefits.
Recognize to dignify
The Recycler Profile is a step to recognize and formalize their work. Because recycling isn't just about waste, it's about people.
This progress was possible thanks to the support of Latitude R and Fundación Avina, which have allowed us to innovate technologically and promote a more inclusive model.

Download the ReciApp®, available on iOS and Android. At the bottom of the home screen, select “I am a recycler and I need to verify my account”. Fill out the form and our team will contact you to activate your profile.
